Smart Gilas Pilipinas defeats Duhok of Iraq, 74-64

Hosts Smart Gilas overcame a stiff mid-game resistance to beat Iraq’s Duhok 74-64 in a Group A game on Tuesday.

“Our defense worked alright, but the offense was all over the place,” sighed Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman.

Duhok down by as many as 15 points in the second quarter did extremely well to chip on the deficit and cut it to down to 53-55 before letting Smart Gilas off the hook.

“Let’s accept it. They were much faster than us,” said Duhok coach Fikrat Abdalahad.

CJ Giles, who was the first import to play for Smart Gilas when the development team made its debut in the 20th FIBA Asia Champions Cup at Jakarta two years ago, led the game in scoring with 20 points for Duhok.

“They (Smart Gilas) are a much better team now. A lot more systematic,” Giles said comparing his tonight’s opponents to teammates of two years ago.

“We knew he’d play an inspired game. But I am happy the way stopped him to 6/16 on the floor,” said Toroman.

“We shot real bad,” said Chris Tiu who had a 11-point game.

Smart Gilas shot 28/69 in field, but as Tiu put it “we were lucky they shot lesser.”

Smart Gilas line up against ASU on the morrow in a game that decides the top team from Group A. Duhok will wait on the sidelines hoping that KL Dragons do not beat Al Ittihad, and even if they do by a close margin, in order not to spoil their progress.
