Dela Hoya-Arum peace pact good for Donaire?

A peace pact between rival boxing promotion companies Top Rank Inc. and Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) could force Nonito Donaire Jr. to finish his contract with Top Rank, a veteran fight analyst said.

Showtime boxing analyst Al Berstein told Examiner.com that this may happen after GBP’s Oscar dela Hoya made peace with rival promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank last week.

"I don't think there is much doubt about that. I just think that's how it is going to end up. From the people I have talked to, have indicated as much,” Bernstein told Examiner.com.

Last March, Donaire switched companies by signing with GBP after claiming that his contract with Top Rank was no longer valid.

Arum, however, insisted that Donaire’s contract remains valid until 2012. He brought the case before an arbitration court, which ruled in favor of Top Rank.

As a result, Donaire’s planned May 28 fight against Anselmo Moreno of Panama was shelved. The fight was supposed to be promoted by GBP.

Bernstein said that Donaire’s transfer to GBP was ill-advised.

“It was just a miscalculation on the part of whoever talked Nonito Donaire into doing that. That was an ill-advised move from Nonito's standpoint. It doesn't mean he had to stay with Bob Arum but it's crazy to leave at a time when someone has an enforceable contract on you,” he said.

Donaire jumped to GBP after knocking out Mexican champion Fernando Montiel in 2 rounds to win the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight titles last February.
